Lovely. They look like a cactus or succulent perhaps similar to what we call a sea fig which grows on the coast and is a kind of edible ice plant (if you like seedy & slimy - yup we had to try it.)
Thank you for the comments. It's a Prickly Pear and is edible. However I would not try to prepare as the prickly spines work their way under your skin and really are painful. *Sukhmandir Kaur you are brave! I imagine the Prickly Pear would taste alot like what you've described.
